The S.O.I.L. Movies

A major component of the SOIL performances were the three films created by Cam Christiansen, Richard McDowell and Sandi Somers. Each was constructed based on a given set of restraints. The mechanics of this idea were a nod to Danish filmmaker (and co-author of the Dogma Manifesto) Lars von Trier's The 5 Obstructions (highly recommended).

The end-goal for the films was to reflect the overall themes explored in the Shrine of Impossible Love CD. That is, love (in all its intricacies) followed by art, war, peace, culture, perception, friendship, thunder and rain. These films would then serve as the basis and inspiration for the musical improvisations created by The Impossible Lovers (the Shrine band). No small task!

After the performances were completed at the High Performance Rodeo, I took the audio recordings from both the nights we recorded and mixed them together to create a compilation of the improvisations and then added them to their respective films. These are the results.

I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the extraordinary group of artists who brought their skills to bear during that January week of experimentation and fun. With love: Dave Clark, Cam Christiansen, Brigitte Dajczer, Kris Demeanor, Onalea Gilbertson, Diane Kooch, Keri Latimer, Carolyn Mark, Richard McDowell, Dan Meichel, Lester Quitzau, Sandi Somers, Eileen Sproule, Chantal Vitalis, and Rachelle van Zanten.
